The cellular and molecular basis of cnidarian neurogenesis.

چکیده
Neurogenesis initiates during early development and it continues through later developmental stages and in adult animals to enable expansion, remodeling, and homeostasis of the nervous system. The generation of nerve cells has been analyzed in detail in few bilaterian model organisms, leaving open many questions about the evolution of this process. As the sister group to bilaterians, cnidarians occupy an informative phylogenetic position to address the early evolution of cellular and molecular aspects of neurogenesis and to understand common principles of neural development. Here we review studies in several cnidarian model systems that have revealed significant similarities and interesting differences compared to neurogenesis in bilaterian species, and between different cnidarian taxa. Cnidarian neurogenesis is currently best understood in the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis, where it includes epithelial neural progenitor cells that express transcription factors of the soxB and atonal families. Notch signaling regulates the number of these neural progenitor cells, achaete-scute and dmrt genes are required for their further development and Wnt and BMP signaling appear to be involved in the patterning of the nervous system. In contrast to many vertebrates and Drosophila, cnidarians have a high capacity to generate neurons throughout their lifetime and during regeneration. Utilizing this feature of cnidarian biology will likely allow gaining new insights into the similarities and differences of embryonic and regenerative neurogenesis. The use of different cnidarian model systems and their expanding experimental toolkits will thus continue to provide a better understanding of evolutionary and developmental aspects of nervous system formation. The Effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine on Neurogenesis in the Hippocampus of Male Rats
Introduction: The administration of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or ecstasy causes memory impairment, whereas neurogenesis improves memory and learning. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of MDMA on neurogenesis in the hippocampus of male rats. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats received intraperitoneal (IP) injections of MDMA (10 mg/kg). We assessed nestin, sex-determining regio...

The brain is an important organ that controls all sensory and motor actions, memory, and emotions. Each anatomical and physiological modulation in various brain centers, results in psychological, behavioral, and sensory-motor changes. Alcohol and addictive drugs such as opioids and amphetamines have been shown to exert a great impact on brain, specifically on the hippocampus. Emerging evidence ...

Objective(s): Epidemiological and biochemical studies conducted over the past two decades have established a strong link between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the exact mechanisms through which aberrations in insulin signaling associated with T2DM contribute to cognitive decline are not yet known. Materials and Methods: In an effort to explore possible m...

Introduction: Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathophysiology of the Alzheimer's disease and it seems that antioxidants may slow the progress of the disease. The current study aimed at investigating the possible protective effects of callistephin (a natural flavonoid) against amyloid β (Aβ)-induced neurogenesis deficits in rats. Methods: Adult Wistar male rats in the current...

Background: Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a neurortophic cytokine which plays an important role in the neural cell survival. Expression of LIF and its receptor, LIFR, in different brain regions has been demonstrated. Based on evidences LIF plays an important role in the modulation of neurogenesis and glial responses to injury. Up-regulation of LIF after central nervous system (CNS) damage...
